How long will my pipes last?

It is not something that anyone wants to do. However, it can be difficult to predict how long your pipes are going to last. It all depends on when they were put in and what they are made of. You also have to consider the fact that each person's plumbing will be different so it can be hard to determine how long they will last. However, there are some common materials pipes are made of that can help you predict when you'll need them to be replaced.

Types of piping

Copper: Copper is still a common building material that lasts between 70 to 80 years. Your home is likely to be in good condition if it was built using copper plumbing. If you have an older home, it is worth consulting a plumber to see if it is possible to replace the piping. Copper can corrode and lead to water contamination.

Chrome: While brass is less common than copper, it has a longer life span. It's an amalgam of copper and zinc that can last between 80 and 100 years. It isn't used as often today due to trace amounts of lead that can cause other problems.

Galvanized steel: This type of steel piping has had its surface coated in zinc to prevent corrosion. Although these pipes are durable for 80 to 100 years, they can rust after a while. These pipes are therefore less reliable. They were used in construction work before the 1960s. Due to the rusting factor, they are not as used today.

Cast Iron - These pipes can last between 80 to 100 years and may rust.

PVC - Although original PVC pipes had a life expectancy of only 45 years, technological improvements have allowed for greater durability. PVC pipes can last as long as 70 years. PVC pipes are not as long-lasting as metal pipes. PVC also doesn't corrode and doesn't add metal to your water. PVC is popular because it doesn't corrode and won't put metal in your water.

Polyester: While polybutylene may be more expensive than other types of pipes, it's also less durable. Polybutylene would crack after 10-15 years, even though it was widely used in the 70s to mid-90s. It's unlikely that these pipes are in your home. However, it's worth having them examined immediately if they are.

Lead: Lead pipes are extremely dangerous for your family's health. They can last as long as 100 years. It is imperative that lead pipes are replaced as soon as possible. If lead is left unattended for long periods of the day, it can cause severe illness.

The sink you are using is a curving section of pipe. Its primary function isn't just to collect unwelcome hair and grease in the kitchen sink. Although it can do that frequently, the curve allows a volume of water to gather and create a barrier to ensure that sewer gas isn't permitted to flow freely into your home and smudge your kitchen sink.

hose bibbs

Winterizing your hose bibbs is crucial as the temperatures dip into the negative 20s. Every spring, we get many calls about broken or burst pipes in crawl spaces and basements. These pipes can be found when homeowners turn their hoses on for the first time. Unbeknownst, their basement is being sprayed by gallons of water, even though they're running their hose outside.
