Tips to remove and prevent rust stains from your toilet bowl

It's common to hear the phrase "bathroom humor." But there's nothing funny or amusing about a dirty restroom. Rusted stains around the toilet bowl are one of the greatest eyesores. Even if all the bathrooms are spotless, rusty streaks may be an eyesore for both guests and household members.

What is the reason for rust stains?

Rusty stains found in the toilet bowl indicate higher levels of iron in your water supply. Although it may not pose any health risks, iron particles can oxidize, and the toilet bowl could turn a distinct red-brown color. The iron could be coming from older pipes that are in danger of deterioration.

How to clean rust spots

  • The rust stains can be removed from your toilet bowl if you do not have a stomach problem. It is important to use the appropriate cleaning products.

  • Use bleach to remove rust stains.

  • Do not use an abrasive scrubber, as this could scratch the porcelain.

  • A homemade cleaning solution can be made with 1-part vinegar and 1-part water or 3-parts baking sugar and 1-part wine as a paste.

  • You can scrub the bowl using a toilet brush, scouring brush, or non-abrasive brush.

  • Be sure to wear safety gear, such as rubber gloves or goggles.

  • Turn off the main water supply and flush your toilet to drain most of the water.

  • For stubborn rust stains, you can use commercial cleaning products such as Borax or Bar Keepers Friend.

Upgrading your plumbing

It is important to clean your toilet regularly in order to prevent rust from developing, but it will not fix iron in the water. You might need to upgrade your plumbing system to stop stains from forming.

  • Replacing old iron pipes with new copper or PEX pipes

  • Water filtration systems can be added to filter iron from the incoming supply.

  • Installing a water softener system to remove many minerals

Although it can do that frequently, the curve allows a volume of water to gather and create a barrier to ensure that sewer gas isn't permitted to flow freely into your home and smudge your kitchen sink.

Winterizing your hose bibbs is crucial as the temperatures dip into the negative 20s. Every spring, we get many calls about broken or burst pipes in crawl spaces and basements. These pipes can be found when homeowners turn their hoses on for the first time. Unbeknownst, their basement is being sprayed by gallons of water, even though they're running their hose outside.
