What's the Perfect Temperature for Your Water Heater

The right temp for the water heater may be a bit like Goldilocks getting the ideal mattress. Too hot, and you risk burns and scorching. Too cold, and you'll be shivering during the bath.

It's a good thing because today, we'll clarify the situation so that you'll have hot water that feels right and also saves cash on your energy costs.

The ideal temperature for traditional tank water

The majority of tank-based water heaters are set to an average setting of 140ºF. This is a good temperature; however, it's likely to be higher than a typical homeowner requires. It's also too high for those who live with an elderly family member or there are children in your living space because it's hot enough to cause boiling water and cause danger and some burns.

To increase the safety and efficiency of your heater, the most common recommendation is that you set your temperature to 120ºF. This setting will help prevent burns while allowing you to enjoy warm water enough for a relaxing shower or dishwashing.

Then why are so many water heaters at 140ºF in the first place? Manufacturers set their standard temperatures high for a variety of reasons. Most likely is that they do not have to pay the energy bill! The reduction in your water's temperature by 10 to 20 degrees could reduce your energy bills by 10% of your energy bills.

Another reason why your water heater has been set to 140ºF is to decrease the possibility of legionella bacteria. This is the bacteria that can cause Legionnaires disease. If you're suffering from a weak immunity, then it could be recommended to keep your water heater at 140ºF. In other cases, it's secure to set the temperature to 10 to 20 degrees lower.

The sink you are using is a curving section of pipe. Its primary function isn't just to collect unwelcome hair and grease in the kitchen sink. Although it can do that frequently, the curve allows a volume of water to gather and create a barrier to ensure that sewer gas isn't permitted to flow freely into your home and smudge your kitchen sink.

Winterizing your hose bibbs is crucial as the temperatures dip into the negative 20s. Every spring, we get many calls about broken or burst pipes in crawl spaces and basements. These pipes can be found when homeowners turn their hoses on for the first time. Unbeknownst, their basement is being sprayed by gallons of water, even though they're running their hose outside.
